Ethical decisions Free Essay Example, 1250 words

Nonetheless, should parents allow the treatment of their children even when the treatment seems to be high-risk and complicated one? This ethical principle asks the question of whether the doctors should take the parents who think that the life-saving care is high-risk and complicated (Beauchamp and Childress, 2001). Beneficence This ethical principle states that whatever is done should, before all else, of benefit to the patient. The principle requires that those with the responsibility over the patient including the parent of minors and the doctors should take actions that benefit the patient, and not to the detriment of the patient (Clark, Cott, and Drinka, 2007). While obviously it appears that one cannot do anything that does not help the patient, people are sometimes tempted to do things, when asked by other physicians or families that are of no or of marginal benefit to patients. For example, doing a test or surgery that is unlikely to help the patient. In the case of parental refusal of life-saving care for a minor child, it raises the question of whether such a refusal is deemed to benefit the minor child or not. We will write a custom essay sample on Ethical decisions or any topic specifically for you Only $17.96 $11.86/pageorder now If such a refusal will benefit the child then the doctors may consider it. However, in most cases, parental refusal is usually contrary to doctors’ opinion. As such, the refusal may be seen not to benefit the child because it is formed against informed and professional view that overrides feelings and emotions (Beauchamp and Childress, 2001). Therefore, the doctors may take the parent to court in order to seek the overruling of the decision by the parent, if they believe that their recommendation will benefit the minor child and that the parental refusal would be detrimental to the child’s health. Non-Maleficence This ethical principle is based on the principle of â€Å"first do no harm† which cautions physicians to avoid harming their patients. Ideally, it is expected that a physician may not have any intention of harming the patient. However, reality shows that some treatments or tests do not probably help, in the long run. This ethical principle requires that the physician should first examine whether his treatments and tests will harm the patient if administered (Gaudine et al, 2011). Since a minor child might not be able to express or foresee the â€Å"harm†, the parent may do so on his or her behalf by refusing to treatment, especially in the case of life-saving care. Admittedly, some treatments and tests can harm the patient and cause more suffering and pain than failure to administer them.

Phenomenon Of The Youth Gang - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 3 Words: 877 Downloads: 8 Date added: 2019/04/12 Category Society Essay Level High school Tags: Gang Violence Essay Did you like this example? Today, the phenomenon of the youth gang surge and spread of criminal subculture represent a relevant issue for the US. In scientific and media discourse, youth gangs are usually perceived and discussed from the standpoint of juvenile violence, delinquencies, and criminal conduct. Meanwhile, the social context and peculiarities of youth rationale for entering the gang are less discussed. The following analysis suggests that the solution of issues connected with social context surrounding the youth gangs, like social class, inequality, and unstable neighborhoods, are of primary importance to mitigate the negative implications of the youth gang spread in the US. First of all, it is necessary to explore what groups can be defined as youth gangs. Despite the presence of numerous definitions, the standard criterion for youth gang identification is the group of 3 or more youth or young adults with a shared identity, allegiance, permanence, and particular form of organization (Holmes, Tewksbury Higgins, 2012). Usually, the distribution of power and influence within gangs is organized vertically and tend to focus on a particular area, while the gangs are commonly comprised of the members of the same ethnic or cultural background. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Phenomenon Of The Youth Gang" essay for you Create order Currently, the youth gangs are increasingly identified with the criminal world of organized crime. Indeed, it is hard to deny that the organized crime in the United States has changed, and instead of large syndicates or criminal organizations, people more often encounter street gangs † groups of criminals who control certain areas and specialize in minor crimes, robberies, racketeering, and drug trafficking. The particular feature of gangs in the US is the growing number of young gang members and the creation of gangs that consists completely of youth. Thus, recent scholar findings suggest that the scale of the problem is considerably underestimated in the US, as there are more than one million juvenile gang members (Pyrooz Sweeten, 2015). However, comprehensive studies admit that the nature of youth gang activity is largely misrepresented, for the most part, due to the character of media discourse and stereotypes. Hence, Shelden, Tracy, and Brown (2013) suggest that even though youth gang members indeed commit crimes, they are far more likely to end up as victims, primarily the victims of the distorted social class system and inequality. Meanwhile, the law enforcement strict view of gangs, as well as popular fears supported by the media, contribute to the lack of understanding of the youth gang spread as a social rather than criminal issue. Thus, such factors as poverty, the spread of unemployment, the growing income gap, discrimination, and inequality drives the entire neighborhoods of urban areas into the threat of gang spread, as in the absence of opportunities to make a living or the lack of support and care, youth organize themselves in these groups more easily. Nevertheless, while it is believed that the affiliation to youth gangs, especially criminal ones, is particularly strong and dangerous, the research found that gangs have high turnover rates, accounting nearly 36 percent annually (Pyrooz Sweeten, 2015). Hence, in turn to popular stereotypes that it is hard to leave the gang, it implies that youth members frequently quit after a short period. Therefore, there are many adolescents at the periphery of the criminal world, and prompt intervention may help to prevent them from involvement. However, besides intervention, it is necessary to acknowledge the core factors that are related to the spread of the youth gangs in the US. Hence, scholars found that youth with low academic achievement, living in single-parent families, and associated with delinquent friends were on average three times more likely to enter the gang (Hill, Lui Hawkins, 2001). Moreover, Johnson (2005) indicates that such factor as unstable neighborhoods that are full of misleading role models, have a lot of broken families and easy access to drugs also contributes to the crisis from the negative side. Of course, Shelden and colleagues (2013) acknowledge negative implication, but suggest that this problem should be viewed without an emphasis on the youth gang threat for society, incarceration, blaming or labeling. After all, they found that the youth rationale for entering the gang is primarily driven by the need of the feeling of belonging and affiliation that boosts self-esteem, provides protection, an alternative to the lack of family support. This shows that the lack of a proper social setting and opportunities in their context resulted in the serious lack of support, care, and attention, which may shift into criminal behavior and violence in case of ignorance. Hence, it is necessary to treat this problem not as a law enforcement issue, but rather a social and community problem, which should be struggled through counseling and youth empowerment programmes, support of families, provision of job and educational opportunities, development of poor neighborhoods and early prevention . In conclusion, the analysis suggests that youth gangs are not so much criminal as the community and societal problem. However, the core reasons of juvenile gang spread are neglected while the popular perception of gangs is largely confused and intensively identified with delinquency and organized crime. Meanwhile, the root social factors like inequality, poverty, the lack of education and employment opportunities, and unstable neighborhoods should get more attention as the primary driving forces of youth gang spread. These findings should become the wake-up call for the US policymakers, educators, and society overall.

Differences Between Plato s And Kant - 1184 Words

I chose to select differences and similarities between Plato’s and Kant’s works. It is very apparent that both philosophers are speaking to the necessity of man developing personal ethics, but each thinker approaches this universal question using different principles. Plato uses Socrates’ dialogue to assess how one acquires wisdom through the acknowledgement of inherent ignorance. Kant evaluates the causes of people remaining in willful ignorance and the methods by which they can lift themselves out of such a state into enlightenment. Before comparing these two philosophers, one must recognize that both have displayed differences in ethics, as some call one â€Å"Platonic† and the other â€Å"Kantian†. First, let us examine the ethics of Immanuel Kant. We must acknowledge the most prominent features in Kant’s ethics were deontological, normative and the value of autonomy. Incidents in the Life of a slave girl. (1481 words) Essay Incidents in the Life of a slave girl. To have read the book the incidents in the life of a slave girl brought tears to my eyes andsadness to my heart. Just to read and understand the life of being a slave and all that was endured by the slaves. When one is treated like a piece of property, like an animal rather than like a human being all due to the color of their skin. The slaves were treated as animals, as property and not as ones having feelings, or having a soul a life or admiration. They were sold as animals and brought with the highest bid. Sad so sad to be treaty asnobodies, to be taken from ones own safe haven, from ones own environment and to be captured as animals shackled in chains and put on a ship to be taken across to an unknown territory to be bought as property. To have been beaten like an animal until the blood shed from ones body, mocked ;laughed at, belittled, having to call another human being master and to be given a name that wasnt your own. Bought by a slaveholder and belittled and disgraced as a human being, a cry for freedom is a cry thatwas felt in the hearts of every slave particularly by those who were being very mistreated and beat upon on a regular basis. A cry for freedom is the cry one could possibly hear back in the day of slavery. Harriet Jacobs was a slave who for the most part had a good life as a slave, she was not beaten on a regular basis nor did she have to go without as far as having a good meal. She had family and friends who loved and cared about her. And as time goes on she had children who also loved and cared for her and were also treated very well for the most part. But she wanted more out of her life than to be just a slave, she wanted her freedom, and theres nothing wrong with that. Harriet possessed a strengththat is beyond compare, she possessed a will power that helped her to believe in herself and to knowthat she was more than just a piece of property, a piece of meat. Harriet was harassed by her slaveholder, Mr. Flint on a regular basis. Today one knows that the type of harassment that Mr. Flint was expressing towards Harriet was sexual harassment. He was obsessed with her in a sickening way. But Harriet kept the faith and stuck to her beliefs, her dignity and her respect and never gave int o Mr. Flint, although she did give into a Mr. Sands. Not only did she give into Mr. Sands but she has two babies byhim and this brings out a serious rage from Mr. Flint, and Harriet refuses all deals made by Mr. Flint. Harriet runs away from her slaveholder and becomes a fugitive. This is when the fugitive law is first talked about in this book. In April 24, 1851 a poster warning colored people in Boston about policemen acting as slave catchers. It read CAUTION!!!! COLORED PEOPLE OF BOSTON, ONE ALL you are hereby respectfully CAUTIONED and advised, to avoid conversing with the Watchmen and PoliceOfficers of Boston, The poster was basically warning the colored people that the Mayor had sent out an order giving kidnappers and slave catchers authority, and for the colored people to trust noone because there were bloodhounds out on their tracks trying to track in order to return them. The Fugitive Slave Act of 1793 was a Federal Law which was written with the intention of enforcing Article 4 Section 2 of the United States Constitution. This constitution required that runaway slaves, fugitives be returned to their masters even after they had made it to free states. .ud2f13cd2bb8c6ca9c19c6082f4cc1684 , .ud2f13cd2bb8c6ca9c19c6082f4cc1684 .postImageUrl , .ud2f13cd2bb8c6ca9c19c6082f4cc1684 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ud2f13cd2bb8c6ca9c19c6082f4cc1684 , .ud2f13cd2bb8c6ca9c19c6082f4cc1684:hover , .ud2f13cd2bb8c6ca9c19c6082f4cc1684:visited , .ud2f13cd2bb8c6ca9c19c6082f4cc1684:active { border:0!important; } .ud2f13cd2bb8c6ca9c19c6082f4cc1684 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ud2f13cd2bb8c6ca9c19c6082f4cc1684 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ud2f13cd2bb8c6ca9c19c6082f4cc1684:active , .ud2f13cd2bb8c6ca9c19c6082f4cc1684:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ud2f13cd2bb8c6ca9c19c6082f4cc1684 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ud2f13cd2bb8c6ca9c19c6082f4cc1684 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ud2f13cd2bb8c6ca9c19c6082f4cc1684 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ud2f13cd2bb8c6ca9c19c6082f4cc1684 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ud2f13cd2bb8c6ca9c19c6082f4cc1684:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ud2f13cd2bb8c6ca9c19c6082f4cc1684 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ud2f13cd2bb8c6ca9c19c6082f4cc1684 .ud2f13cd2bb8c6ca9c19c6082f4cc1684-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ud2f13cd2bb8c6ca9c19c6082f4cc1684:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Play EssayThe Fugitive Slave Act was an act in which the issues for runaways was older than the Constitution. It proved to be the most explosive act of the Compromise measures. What ever happenedto the Golden Rule? This means we should treat others the way we want to be treated. The precepts Of justice was violated when the Act was written and carried out. It was an Act in which gave southernSlave owners the legal force to go and take back their slaves who escaped to the North to Be free. This was an Act in which the Southerners loved and felt was important to them because it gavethe slave owners a sense of security. In that it was a sense of well give you this for that. I t was a quid Pro quo situation in which the South made an agreement not to secede in the exchange it gave the slave owners a peace of mind. The Fugitive Slave Act contained a provision for the return of any runaway slaves. Person held to service or labor in one state who escaped to another. The fugitive Slave Act is exactly what it was, it was another way designed by the white man, the slaveholder to keep people of color in bondage. A lot of slaves became fugitives because they would run away in search of a better life. They alsobecame fugitives because they were tired of being beat up on and being mistreated, they searched in hopes of being free and fled to a free state. They did remain free at one point but when the Fugitive Slave Act was written and passed, they were no longer free and would have to be sent back to their slaveholder whenever and wherever they were found. The interesting yet sad thing about this act is that even the free African Americans were also being taken bac k as slaves. They were taken back because they had no way of proving that they were not fugitives because they could not speak on their behalf. And anyone who harbored a fugitive would have to face harsh punishments and fines. The kidnappers the slave catchers did not want to hear anything the slave had to say because of the color of their skin. In order to reclaim a slave, the only thing a slave owner had to do at the slave owners hearing was to pay a commissioner. For keeping a person in shackles a commissioner was paid $10, but paid only $5 for setting him free. The Separation of Powers was one of the first ways in which The Fugitive Slave Act violated justice. It allowed for connection between enforcement in judicial decisions. Due to the commissioners at the slave owners hearing being paid more for keeping the slaves in shackles and less for setting them free it proved that the commissioners were more interestedin personal financial gain than in then Constitutional rights of fr ee blacks. Primarily because over the first 15 months of the Fugitive Slave Act, about 84 cases of alleged fugitives returned to their ownersand only about 5 alleged blacks were let go. Personal financial gain thats what that was all about. being a person of color back in those days meant one was hunted down like an animal and it meant you were a nobody and you had no voice. Wow! Times have truly changed, back then a black man had no voice, but nowadays a black man is President of the United States of America. What ablessing to know that the color of ones skin can no longer keep us in bondage on a lot of things in this day and age. Time has changed, and thank God he blessed me to live in this time, this day and age and not in the day and age of my ancestors. The mind is willing but the flesh is weak, I dont think that I would have made it back when Linda was around. To have endured all that she endured so that she andher children could be free. A mothers love is so one that is so ph enomenal and so unconditional. .u367c89e2f1732cdf1f208bd7535e35a9 , .u367c89e2f1732cdf1f208bd7535e35a9 .postImageUrl , .u367c89e2f1732cdf1f208bd7535e35a9 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u367c89e2f1732cdf1f208bd7535e35a9 , .u367c89e2f1732cdf1f208bd7535e35a9:hover , .u367c89e2f1732cdf1f208bd7535e35a9:visited , .u367c89e2f1732cdf1f208bd7535e35a9:active { border:0!important; } .u367c89e2f1732cdf1f208bd7535e35a9 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u367c89e2f1732cdf1f208bd7535e35a9 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u367c89e2f1732cdf1f208bd7535e35a9:active , .u367c89e2f1732cdf1f208bd7535e35a9:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u367c89e2f1732cdf1f208bd7535e35a9 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u367c89e2f1732cdf1f208bd7535e35a9 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u367c89e2f1732cdf1f208bd7535e35a9 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u367c89e2f1732cdf1f208bd7535e35a9 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u367c89e2f1732cdf1f208bd7535e35a9:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u367c89e2f1732cdf1f208bd7535e35a9 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u367c89e2f1732cdf1f208bd7535e35a9 .u367c89e2f1732cdf1f208bd7535e35a9-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u367c89e2f1732cdf1f208bd7535e35a9:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Black Footed Ferret EssayIn this book Incidents in the life of a slave girl, Linda shows her phenomenal love for children and forherself.
